The Lake of the Woods (LOW) Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company primarily serves the Lake of the Woods community and a surrounding area bounded by the Rapidan River, the Spotsylvania County line, and Routes 20 and 611. Equipped with four fire vehicles, a crash vehicle, three Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances, an emergency response vehicle and water rescue equipment, designated volunteers are on radio alert at all times. Communications are maintained under the 911 system in Orange County and with other nearby fire and rescue unity and the emergency rooms at Mary Washington and Culpeper Regional Hospitals. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency medical technician courses are offered periodically to interested persons in LOW and the surrounding area. Our F&R Company is dependent on donations and volunteer workers.
The LOW F&R Company is made up of two squads, the fire department and the rescue squad. The majority of the members are trained and serve either the fire or rescue descipline, however, some members are trained and serve both squads. All members are certified through the State of Virginia. The fire department receives certification through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, while the rescue squad certification comes from the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services.
